Despite criticism of its high frame and “old fashioned” design, Merkel action has been copied by many gun makers, not just in Germany and Austria, but in Belgium, Spain, Italy, and even Japan. Several Belgian makers have Merkel inspired designs with some that are just out right copies. The best over and under produced by the Spanish maker AyA, their Model 37 Super, is an almost carbon copy of Merkel 303E….they also used to make a copy of the 201E which they called Coral. Ugartechea used to make a neat looking copy of Merkel 203E that still pop up on the used gun market, usually as 20 gauges!

Italian makers FAMARS as well as Piotti, Renato Gamba, and several others either used to or still make Merkel copies (sidelocks), despite the fact that their mainstay over and under guns are shallow framed. At one time just about all of Italian makers except for Beretta made Merkel copies.
